THE HISTORY OF WOLVERINE COMPANY
The creation of Wolverine Company dates back to the Great Galactic War. Each trooper was originally part of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, formerly known as the Dantooine Shock Commandos. After seeing the Dantooine Shock Commandos in action, high ranking officials within the Republic Military had decided to reorganise them into the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, the initial company of elite Republic Troopers. They were given the toughest jobs, dropped into the hottest combat zones, all of which were classified as having very low survival rates. Typho Raame was transferred into the Dantooine Shock Commandos directly before they were reorganised into the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, his rank at the time being Sergeant. Raame swiftly formed hard-edged comradeships with the men and women of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos.
His only true friend there was Garviel Lucen, a fellow trooper from his fire team during their time as troopers of the 3rd Kuati Assault Corps. Both men had proven themselves during the chaotic warfare of their first engagement, Operation Hammer Storm, on the jungle and forest planet of Teth. The other men in their fire team had all been killed within the first few hours of the operation, yet both Lucen and Raame had held steadfast and done their duty to the letter, earning the approval and interest of Colonel Zayne “Dragon” Merkoni, the commanding officer of the Dantooine Shock Commandos.
The two troopers quickly rose through the ranks of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, Lucen being promoted to a Corporal within two months of being a Shock Commando, and Raame a Second Lieutenant within four. They worked well together, as well as with the other members of their team, Thaddeus Kruger, Sharrke Whilkens and Ryke Zahrial.
Their team was designated Delta Team, and soon was one of the most elite teams within the 1st Republic Shock Commandos. However, there were thirty-nine other teams, organised into four platoons, ten squads to a platoon, and friendships did not last long, as positions were constantly replaced due to dozens of their troopers being killed in action. Despite being an elite commando company, the missions the Shock Commandos took part in were highly deadly, and lesser companies of troopers would probably have lost every man available.
Some would say it was a miracle, others would say it was luck, but the troopers of Delta Team knew that it was plain skill and determination that kept the men of their squad alive. Throughout eight years of fighting in the Great Galactic War, time and time again each of the troopers of Delta Team cheated death. No matter what happened to them, whether it was blaster shots, explosive damage, burns, broken bones, nothing could keep them from their duty. They began to lose count of the amount of times one of them was wounded in action, and they began taking bets on how long they would last before someone got hit again. It usually didn’t last long.
It was near the close of the Great Galactic War when the idea of a hunter-killer, elite black ops company came to mind. The 1st Republic Shock Commandos had just completed a series of near-suicidal assault missions on a planet called Cadomai. Cadomai was located in the Aparo sector, a section of space that resided within the Tingel Arm. Cadomai was a highly important strategic planet for the Sith Empire, supplying the military with dozens of companies of elite Imperial Agents. A destruction of these Imperial Academies would serve as a great victory for the Galactic Republic, and hopefully lessen the number of spies that managed to make their way into the midst of loyal Republic citizens.
For the most part, the missions were complete successes, the Imperial Academies falling one by one to the elite fighting skills of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos. However, a Republic Major General named Paelleus began using the Shock Commandos to further his legacy and publicity. Every time the Commandos came out victorious, he would state that it was thanks only to his supreme tactical genius that they were able to pull off the missions. Despite this, sooner or later the truth began leaking out. It had nothing to do with the “supreme tactical genius” of Major General Paelleus that the missions were successes. It was the coordination, dedication, and determination of the troopers of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, and that alone.
So, like the scheming military politician that the Major General was, Paelleus came up with a mission plan that would eliminate the meddlesome troopers who threatened his pristine tactical record. All four platoons would be inserted into a combat zone close to Cadomai’s capital city, Brella. There, they were to execute the local governor and any of his staff that didn’t immediately surrender. However, Paelleus forget to inform the troopers that they were dropping right into the midst of a regiment of Death Blades, the elite special forces of the Imperial Military.
It was a disaster for the Shock Commandos. Within thirty minutes of fighting, nearly one hundred of the troopers had been killed in action. Despite this, the men continued to fight, inflicting heavy casualties on the Death Blades. But it was a hopeless endeavour... three thousand against two hundred. It was lucky that the Commandos had managed to last that long at all.
One of the Commandos had managed to signal one of the ships in orbit to come evacuate them from the battlefield, as they were already down by half their strength. However, it would be at least another ten to fifteen minutes before the dropship would be there. In that time, the troopers lost over another fifty men, leaving their strength to one hundred and fifty-seven killed in action, another twenty-four wounded in action, and just nineteen Commandos uninjured.
Among the casualties was Zayne “Dragon” Merkoni, who now held the rank of Commander thanks to his tactical and combat successes over the years. He had been wounded by two blaster shots, one to his right leg, and another in his left shoulder blade. Knowing that he was going to die there, Merkoni charged the enemy positions, taking a score of Death Blades with him, through sheer stubbornness and determination. Before he died, he ordered Raame, who had been promoted to Captain of Second Platoon two years back, to take his place as commanding officer of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, and charged him with “Getting our boys the hell out of here”.
The dropship soon arrived after that, and Raame and his men managed to get aboard safety, with no more casualties. However, it was still a major disaster for the 1st Republic Shock Commandos. Nineteen Commandos uninjured, twenty-four wounded. One hundred and fifty-seven killed in action. It was devastating to the remaining troopers. While those wounded received treatment, the now Commander Raame led his eighteen Commandos with him and demanded to be given access to General Paelleus. Like all of the tools Paelleus used, he was denied. Denied and discarded.
Despite being an overall victory for Paelleus, he was frustrated that not all the Commandos had been wiped out. It left room for the leaking of the truth, yet the General soon made a statement to military officials, citing that it was tactical failure on the part of Commander Merkoni and his lieutenants that had turned the mission into a bloodbath. The Commandos weren’t even allowed to talk to anyone about what had happened. Besides, who would have listened to them? It was their word against a General who had a pristine record and was a “tactical genius”.
It was after this battle, this disaster, the misuse of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos, and the way that they had been treated afterwards, that the seeds of doubt began to form in the minds of the troopers. More and more, they had seen how the loyal, honourable soldiers of the Republic had been used by selfish, greedy, ambitious political and military officials, and not the good of the government and galaxy that they were trying to defend.
However, it was not until the close of the Great Galactic War that the troopers of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos made their fateful decision. It stemmed from the most decisive events in the last three centuries. The Alderaan Peace Conference, the Sacking of Coruscant, and of course, the subsequent Treaty of Coruscant.
All three events occurred within six months of the Massacre of Brella, and the loss of over one hundred and fifty of the best soldiers the Republic had to offer. The news of the destruction of the Jedi Temple, and much of Coruscant was devastating to the Commandos, as well as the millions of Republic Military personnel stationed around the galaxy.
At the time, the 1st Republic Shock Commandos had been on a tour of duty within the Carida System, when the news of not only the Sacking of Coruscant, but the unbelievable Alderaan Peace Conference reached them. After everything the men and women of the Republic Military had fought for, and died for... After countless billions of civilian and military deaths alike... the Republic was willing to merely begin peace talks with the dishonourable and destructive Sith Empire. The Commandos could scarcely believe it. Furthermore, the news that the Sith Empire had used the peace talks as a distraction, attacking Coruscant, and the fact that the politicians of the Republic were so naive, so gullible to believe that the Sith Empire would not double cross them, left the troopers beside themselves with rage.
This was not the Republic that they had given everything for. This was a weak, stagnant government system. A government system that was willing to accept something less than absolute victory. A government system that was willing to set aside the countless billions that had died in its name, just to gain a measure of peace. This was not something worth fighting for. It had just taken them so long to realise that.
In six months, Commander Raame had only brought seven more troopers into his ranks. He didn’t want dozens of new men all at one time. He needed them to come in slowly, shaping them into what they were: Elite Commandos. Raame also needed them to trust him and their comrades completely, as well as obeying their Commander before anyone else. In six months, Raame had only found seven men willing to do that. That’s all he needed, however. Fifty men was enough to form his own private company of Commandos, should the need arise.
Now, after the events that had just occurred, it was evident that the time had come. No more serving corrupt bureaucrats and politicians. No more serving ambitious and self-interested Generals and Admirals who cared nothing for the lives of their men. It was time that Raame and his Commandos fought for themselves. They would be considered “renegades” and “deserters” by the politicians and leaders. It hardly mattered.
There would be no standing around. No more paying attention to pointless orders. It was time that the Commandos took the fight directly to the Sith Empire, through irregular, unethical, even war criminal worthy illegal black operation warfare tactics. Victoria Per Ullus Opes. Victory By Any Means. And so, with their motto firmly implanted in the minds of the troopers, the title of the 1st Republic Shock Commandos was dropped, and replaced by a name that would instil fear in those who served the Sith Empire, and anyone who stood in their way.
Fifty former elite human Republic Commandos, no longer tied down by the rules of the Republic. Willing to wreak havoc against anyone who stood in their way. Armed with the most advanced weaponry humanity could design. They would stop at nothing, nor listen to any notions of mercy, compassion, or remorse, until they completed their mission, or died trying.
Thus, Wolverine Company was born...
